Services for Late-Talking Toddlers

When your young child’s speech or understanding is a little bit behind others of the same age, Speech Therapists offer a type of intervention called Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCI). This is a well-established evidence-based approach that therapists use in therapy sessions with parents and caregivers. Studies have shown PCI to be very effective in improving a child’s language, long term (Russ & Niec, 2011). It seems obvious, but no-one knows your child better than you! PCI therapy coaches you to be your child’s primary communication teacher. You will be taught the skills and strategies you need to support your child to improve their communication. Structured coaching is provided, gradually providing more strategies and giving feedback and goals to progress.

Initial Assessment

During an initial assessment, we will discuss your concerns and your child’s developmental history. I will assess your child by watching and listening as they play and talk. I may ask your child to carry out particular activities in order to find out more about their communication skills. We will discuss your child’s communication skills and any difficulties s/he appears to be having. Verbal feedback and advice will be provided. This session usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half. A written report can also be provided on request.

Therapy sessions

Therapy sessions will be planned according to needs of your child. Targets will be jointly agreed with you. During PCI therapy parent-coaching sessions, strategies will be modelled by the therapist for you to try. These can take place as part of fun, play activities or as part of everyday routines such as snack time, or story time. Further ideas will also be provided to try in-between therapy sessions. Therapy sessions usually last around 60 minutes.
